Atlassian Ascend: Adopting a cloud-first strategy
In line with its cloud-first strategy, Atlassian has recently announced Data Center (DC) products end of life (EOL) on March 28, 2029. After this time, DC subscriptions and Marketplace apps will also expire and become read-only. Atlassian is moving toward a more advanced, secure, and cohesive platform, while enabling teams to connect and simplify processes with modern, intelligent tools.
If you are an existing DC customer, or are looking to migrate from one diagramming tool to draw.io, and have any specific questions about how this will affect you, please get in touch with us.
The three-year timeline

Security in the cloud
Before widespread cloud adoption, Data Center was the answer for industries with strict data sovereignty, security, and compliance regulations. It’s provided organizations with the ability to host data on their own servers, behind their firewall, giving peace of mind that has been crucial for many highly-regulated environments.
Atlassian, and we at draw.io, believe that moving from on-premise to cloud should not mean a decrease in data security and privacy for teams. Read below to find out what your options are.
Migrating from Data Center to Cloud
If you are moving from Confluence DC to Cloud and are in a highly-regulated industry like finance, healthcare, government, etc., then the draw.io Zero Egress app that Runs on Atlassian is a strong option. Built on Atlassian’s Forge platform, the app prevents any data from leaving your Confluence instance, and there is no data processing between draw.io servers and Confluence. It essentially functions like a firewall around your app. Find out more
If you’re looking for premium support, a dedicated account manager, custom security reviews, and more, then the draw.io Advanced app edition for Confluence Cloud also contains a zero-egress switch that you can enable or disable to restrict all data egress, except for Atlassian API calls. If you want to take advantage of features like using AI to generate diagrams with Smart Templates, and real-time collaboration with shared live mouse cursors, then the draw.io standard app for Confluence and Jira Cloud has everything you need. What’s more, being on cloud means security updates and bug fixes happen in real time. Find out more
Migrating from another diagramming app to draw.io
If you’re looking to migrate to draw.io from another tool like Gliffy, we recommend you migrate to draw.io first, before moving to Cloud. This will make the transition much smoother, while having the added bonus of being better value for money. You can perform the migration (test and final deployment) using trial keys, meaning you won’t have to pay for draw.io before you migrate.
We’ve made our Gliffy mass import tool as straightforward as can be. Our Gliffy migration guide, will take you through the process step by step, and, we’re here to help if you have questions or run into any hiccups.
Some things to keep in mind:
-
Make sure that you have the latest version of Gliffy installed.
-
Make sure that the Admin responsible has the necessary permissions across all spaces prior to beginning the migration.
-
We recommend performing the mass import in a test instance first!
-
Perform the migration outside of your company’s business hours.
-
Once migrated, a new Confluence page version is created, with replaced draw.io macros containing the converted diagrams. The original files remain as attachments on the Confluence page and these remained unchanged, meaning the revision history of each diagram remains.
