The draw.io Zero Egress app that Runs on Atlassian
With the draw.io Zero Egress app, your diagramming data is secure. The app is completely built on Atlassian’s Forge platform and, as the name suggests, is zero egress, i.e. prevents any data from leaving your Confluence instance. It’s essentially like a firewall around the whole app.
Everything is stored in Confluence, and there is no data processing involved between draw.io servers and Confluence.
draw.io: Serious about security
draw.io is, and has always been, serious about security – it underpins every decision we make. We’ve always stayed ahead of the curve – we are Cloud Fortified, and we implemented data residency even before Atlassian made this a requirement for platinum vendors! So, developing the draw.io Zero Egress app was the next logical step for us.
As with any app guaranteeing full data security, naturally there are some feature limitations with the draw.io Zero Egress app, specifically, ones requiring cross-domain traffic. These include generating diagrams using AI with our Smart Templates, and live collaboration in Confluence Cloud. However, collaboration is still very much possible with the draw.io Zero Egress app, as we’ll see in the next section below:
Collaborate securely with synchronized updates
Some of the services of the draw.io standard app require egress, so for the draw.io Zero Egress app, we either removed those services (like our Smart Templates AI feature), or we rebuilt the service to make it zero-egress ready (like our collaborative editing feature). You and your colleagues can collaboratively edit a diagram, with any changes automatically appearing in the editor for all users. This is made possible by the autosave feature, which synchronizes updates made by multiple users after a short delay of a few seconds (the synchronization speed can be set by your administrator).
While the updates are not strictly happening in real time, changes made by one user will appear for others after a brief delay, and the diagram will be saved as a Confluence page attachment. These changes are then merged and loaded for all users automatically.

Collaboratively edit diagrams – just like in Data Center!
Built on Forge
The draw.io Zero Egress app is built on Forge, Atlassian’s own trusted cloud-based platform for developers to build Confluence and Jira apps in a customizable, scalable way, benefitting developers and users alike. draw.io itself is a Forge app: the main difference is that with the draw.io Zero Egress app, there is no cross-domain traffic – data only passes between the Forge backend and client browser. This is ideal for companies striving for data protection certifications like ISO 27000 , 27001 and 27002, and the GDPR.
The criteria to achieve Forge status are tough: our draw.io Zero Egress app must adhere to rigorous security standards. This is in order to abide by the Forge Manifest, which outlines critical information on how an app built on the Forge platform must behave in terms of things like app permissions, modules, and runtime environment.
For more information on Forge, see our related blogpost, draw.io is first to Forge.
An app you can trust
